The town was so named on account of it being the newest town on the railroad, according to local history. WebThe Town’s growth was due to the railroad. Development grew as the mining industry expanded because the railroad allowed coal to be transported. But it is known throughout West Virginia and beyond for the 1886 Newburg Mine Disaster, when, on January 21, 1886, 39 men lost their lives in a gas explosion of the Mountain Brook Shaft.
